Paper Marbling

I decided to teach a paper marbling workshop this fall to compliment a Japanese book binding workshop I am teaching. The idea is to get people to come and marble paper that they can then use to decorate their books with(for any of you who are familiar with book binding and paper marbling, please disregard the fact that the pictures of the paper we are marbling are not Japanese style marbling...I am banking on the fact that most people in the workshop will not know the difference)

So...I did a little research on marbling. Up to this point I have only used cheap, but really cool, kits to marble paper at art and craft days we host for kids. I wanted to have something a little more... professional looking.

I finally found some helpful information and ordered a kit to teach myself. Naturally, I had to practice my new found art technique , and naturally, I had to let Elsa in on the fun. Here are some pictures of our adventures. BTW Audra did some great papers too.

Here we are tapping the brush to drop the colors onto the specially prepared water solution. This resulted in Elsa and I getting covered in paint drops, not to mention the walls, the floor, and the table. I didn't put down enough coverings.

Next, we swirled the colors.

We actually had a few more steps where Elsa tried to make some designs by applying individual drops to the mixture. This picture is of us laying the paper in the paints.

Here we are pulling out the final product

Here are some examples of what we made. Hmmmm.....I will have to take some better pictures. these turned out blurry.

EDIT:

Here are some better photos

My kids are going to think I'm so boring! What a creative thing. Elsa is lucky to have such talented (and patient) parents. The paper is beautiful.
